Who we are

Custom Model Railroads (CMR) is a Baltimore-based business. It was founded in 1991 by Jeff Springer. It is located in the old Noxema factory in Hampden.

Each staff member can do all the work, although each has a niche or specialty in which they take pride. In addition to the full time staff, CMR calls upon a number of freelance modelers and electronics gurus when needed.

Jeff Springer is the founder and owner of the company. A lifetime model railroader, Jeff grew up in Switzerland, the son of a US diplomat. He moved to Baltimore in the eighties to study at the Maryland Institute College of Art. After graduation he worked in the sign and display industry and as a graphic designer. Mr. Springer works on every project and follows it through from concept to completion. He is in charge of drawing and conceptualization and all aspects of bench work, track wiring and modeling.

Dave is a professional model maker and artist. He specializes in bench work, laying track, building structures and landscaping. Mr. Bakker and Mr. Springer have collaborated on museum projects including the Titanic exhibit at the Maryland Science Center.

Jill (a.k.a. "Shop Super") works in the shop primarily as a model builder, building and finishing models with a great attention to detail. Jill also does much of the track work and wiring of the layouts as well as anything else that is just too darn tedious for the rest of us. Jill has a background in photography and art conservation.

Jamie is a life time model railroader and works in the shop building benchwork, laying track and building models. Jamie also specializes in DCC installation and has a great knowledge of railroad factoids that simply amazes us. You never know what you are going to need to know!
